Douro is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes of the world with its scenic views of the river Douro and Valley, it was one of the last sites in the New 7 Wonders of Nature, and was recently named one of the top regions for sustainable tourism by National Geographic. It is situated on the edge of a granitic and schist zone and it is one of the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. This nature refuge where body and mind are balanced is the perfect place to meditate and relax.
There are many things to do and see in this region, from sightseeing to gastronomy.
We recommend in the "What to Do" list a river cruise, seeing the Douro Valley from the river is something quite unique due to the landscape, there are parts of the Valley that can only be reached if one goes by boat as there aren't any roads leading to those secluded places. There are several cruising companies that offer this kind of service, namely DouroAzul www.douroazul.com and many others. Cruises usually include a tour in the vineyards and a train journey, but there are many tours to choose from.
From the farmhouse, the nearest place to catch a cruise is in Peso da Régua city at the docks, there are many boat cruises and types of journeys one can choose (there are boats that play loud music during the journey which can be unpleasant, it is better to check in advance before choosing your journey/cruise).
There are many places were one can do wine tasting, for example near by, Quinta da Covela (once owned by famous filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira) is worth a visit. It's a 34 hectares property dated from the 16th century offering excellent wine and scenic views.
Located in Peso da Régua, at the heart of Douro Valley, this beautiful building is set overlooking the river Douro and its Valley with an imposing architecture that brings us 3 centuries back.
Enjoy the beautiful landscape and views of the river Douro and Valley.
